Joey is originally from:

Los Angeles, California.

Favorite ecosystem, plant, and animal:

My favorite ecosystem would be the aquatic ecosystem, specifically marine ecosystems. I think it’s cool that while the ocean covers over 70% of our planet, we have yet to explore most of it. Rainforests are a close second. My favorite plant is kelp as it provides food, shelter, and protection for a diverse community of marine animals. While an ever-evolving list, my top 5 favorite animals at this moment in no particular order are whales, nudibranchs (look them up if you’ve never heard of them, you won’t regret it), bears, black jaguars, and tree frogs.

Favorite thing to do when not working:

Anything that involves the ocean, and I also love to travel and explore. Surfing, free diving, and SCUBA diving are some of my favorite things, and even better if I can do these things in new places. Each time I do any of these activities, it is a new, unique, and exciting experience. Both some of my most terrifying moments in life and some of my most exhilarating come when I surf or dive.

Role model:

My mom! She is the best.

When Joey was little, she wanted to be:

A blue monkey…not sure on my thoughts behind this one…

Favorite book or film:

Book: The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Movie: Surf’s Up.

Music that instantly puts Joey in a good mood:

R&B.

If Joey could be a superhero, her superpower would be:

Shapeshifting.

Special skill or passion:

I can recite a weird amount of pi digits…I should really save that brain space for memorizing more important things. I also enjoy photography, particularly wildlife photography!

Most memorable experience in nature:

Going kayaking with my best friend, brother, and grandpa off the coast of Maui, Hawaii. We were on the water for 8 or so hours and would stop to snorkel at several points along the way. It was challenging because there was a big swell, but once we got past the crashing waves, we were able to coast with the current! We got to see the island from a perspective few people get to see. The coves we stopped in had cliff jumping and amazing marine life such as turtles, sharks, eels, fish, and sea urchin. Being in the ocean with some of my favorite people doing some of my favorite things is hard to beat.

Favorite food to eat or make:

Pasta with butter & parmesan. I wrote my college essays on this meal. Jokes on me, I am now allergic to pasta, but that’s beside the point. I could also eat tacos for every meal the rest of my life. Everything is better in a tortilla, change my mind.
