Rainwater reuse system provides greenhouse with inexpensive watering operation for native plants.

Project Description

Santa Fe Greenhouses is a full-service retail greenhouse and tree nursery that specializes in waterwise plants that are appropriate for the region. Since water is an expensive necessity for nursery operations, a rainwater harvesting system was an obvious addition. As land is at a premium in this urban environment, above ground cisterns were not acceptable.

Using a greenhouse roof collection system, and an underground cistern (Invisible Structures Rainstor®), Biohabitats engineered a rainwater reuse system that provided rainwater for the spray irrigation system in the greenhouses. Use of the Invisible Structure system allowed Santa Fe Greenhouses to store nursery stock on top of the cistern.

Biohabitats also transformed a pond on the property, which had become an eyesore, into a demonstration garden in which runoff from parking lots and roads was managed through a sedimentation and detention pond featuring native plants.
