UNC Chapel Hill charts the course for a sustainable future with goals of net zero water, zero waste to landfills, and net zero greenhouse gases driving its Campus Master Plan.
In 2016, intent on advancing campus sustainability, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill launched its Three Zeros Environmental Initiative, an integrated approach to reducing its environmental footprint through the goals of net zero water, zero waste to landfills and net zero greenhouse gases. Guided by this inspiring initiative, Biohabitats contributed to the development of a new Campus Master Plan for the University.
As a key member of the master planning team led by Ayers Saint Gross, Biohabitats contributed expertise in stormwater retrofit analysis, stormwater conceptual design, and natural resource assessment and planning.
After assessing open spaces throughout the main and satellite campuses, Biohabitats identified, analyzed, and prioritized opportunities to incorporate green infrastructure and improve open space, stormwater management, and water and sewer infrastructure. This included opportunities to conserve and restore natural campus resources and integrate them into the campus learning, life, and infrastructure.
