A comprehensive inventory of trees helps inform the development of the only active military installation in the New York Metropolitan Area.

Project Description

Located in the southwest corner of Brooklyn, Fort Hamilton is the only active military installation in the New York City Metropolitan Area. Spanning more than 120 acres, it is a community comprised of active duty Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reserve Components.

As part of a larger effort to guide future installation development plans, the U.S. Army sought to update its 2014 Tree and Shrub Inventory Mapbook, a digital map of all trees and shrubs on the property.

As an ecological consultant to the engineering firm, First Environment, Biohabitats performed an inventory of all trees and shrubs on the installation. Using ESRI mobile app Collector for ArcGis, Biohabitats confirmed the species and location of each tree, updating the diameter, and tagging any untagged tree. Biohabitats also produced a list of plant species, highlighting any that were invasive, noxious, or sensitive/rare.
