Favorite ecosystem:
My favorite ecosystem is the temperate forests of the Northeast. I’ve always loved how much it changes through the seasons and yet always feels like home.
Favorite thing to do when not working:
I love hiking, biking, and cooking new things. I also love crafting (knitting and jewelry-making have been my favorites lately) and playing sports (mostly ultimate frisbee and volleyball).
Childhood career ambition:
As a kid, I vacillated between wanting to be a professional soccer player and a veterinarian.
Music that instantly puts Aly in a good mood:
If I need an instant pick-me-up, I’ll go for Motown or Disco. Hard to be in a bad mood when you’re up dancing!
Special talent, skill, or passion:
I am a super enthusiastic vermicomposter. I’ve had worm bins in my various apartments for the past 10+ years.
Most memorable experience in nature:
I took my nieces on their first camping trip this summer. They were really nervous and had so many questions. Sleeping outside was definitely outside their comfort zone, but seeing some of that fear turn into wonder was really something special. They were so proud of themselves and keep asking when we’ll do it again.
