Meet Operations Assistant Kirsten Jones

Favorite ecosystem:

My favorite ecosystem is the rainforest. Specifically, El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico and mainly because that’s the only one that I have had the opportunity to visit so far. To me, being in a tropical rainforest feels like stepping into a different reality. While I am grateful for modern technology (to an extent), the rainforest serves as a reminder of the natural beauty of the earth. I love that the rainforest has the ability to be complex, unique, healing, beautiful, and nurturing in its natural form. Just like us. It feels impossible to be in the rainforest and not be present and grounded in the moment. Hearing the animals, feeling the wet earth beneath your feet, and experiencing the unique sights and smells of the forest makes it easy to disconnect from everyday distractions and reconnect with nature. Spending time in that environment made me appreciate parts of nature I might otherwise overlook.

Favorite thing to do when not working:

On the day to day, when I’m not working, I love to binge watch my shows. I’ve been a tv person since I was a kid. My mom and grandma were the same way their whole lives. It’s one way that we like to bond together. I also love to take very long walks. I’m not sure if everyone has heard of barefoot shoes yet, but if you like walking, just thank me later! Outside of the day to day, I love taking girls trips and family vacations and I love trying random activities. I may do a one-off cooking class, aerial yoga, or a bachata class. If it’s a free class, I’m in there lol.

Music that instantly puts Kirsten in a good mood:

Anything Megan Thee Stallion. Megan has a lot of affirming music. While I love many genres and artists, if I’m feeling down, Megan Thee Stallion always has a song that lifts my mood and reminds me to stay confident.

If Kirsten could be a superhero, her superpower would be:

I would want to fly simply because it seems super fun and thrilling. Would it save the world? Maybe. I could travel wherever, whenever without the use of a private jet. So technically, I’m a superhero haha!

Most memorable experience in nature:

Last fall, my cousin organized an artist’s retreat at Little Pond in Pennsylvania. While we did have access to a full kitchen and hot showers, we spent most of the time outside. We had a bonfire going the entire weekend and lots of blankets because it was cold and we slept in horse stables outside. So, it still felt like a pretty true camping experience. We did an activity where we found a spot in the woods to sit where we couldn’t see anyone else, but we could still hear the instructor. She led us through a meditation where we listened to our surroundings so intently that we became a part of it. When we first started, nature was very quiet. But as we waited patiently, we began to hear the birds communicate loudly as well as more light movement through the trees. Afterwards, we all talked about what we heard, and everyone had a different perspective which was so cool to hear.

Favorite food to make:

Although I am not a vegan, I love to make vegan dishes. They are so creative and it’s fun to turn different veggies into an entirely different meal. I love to make fried oyster mushrooms, and cauliflower sandwiches.
