As a subconsultant to Buro Happold, Biohabitats provided ecological advisory services to support the Reimagine the Canals program, an initiative that examined how the Erie Canal system could be revitalized to enhance economic and recreational opportunities and strengthen the corridor’s environmental resiliency.
Biohabitats provided planning and analysis services related to the ecological and economic impacts of aquatic invasive species management in the Erie Canal; naturalizing the Mohawk River through modification to the movable dams; and restoring wetlands adjacent to the canal. As part of the analysis, Biohabitats collected local and regionally specific data related to wetland value, habitat types, aquatic species distribution, hydrologic data, water quality information, stakeholder interviews, and recreational behavior.
Biohabitats compiled this information into detailed technical memoranda, which quantified the ecological and economic effects of the recommendations from the Reimagine the Canals Task Force Report. Biohabitats also provided ecological advisory services related to the conceptual planning of the pilot projects identified by the Task Force.
