Biohabitats was a key member of a team tasked with creating an illustrative landscape master plan for the 85-acre campus of Kendal at Lexington, a not-for-profit Life Plan Community. The plan, which focuses on both sustainability and ease of maintenance, integrates the enhancement of ecological function.
To characterize ecological conditions and better understand the site within the context of regional ecology, Biohabitats conducted an ecological assessment, both within and beyond the property boundaries. This included desktop analysis, field reconnaissance, and an initial regulatory review of available as-built information related to wetland, forest, and stormwater management. Biohabitats then identified opportunities for conservation, ecological restoration, improved management and maintenance practices, and environmental education. A stakeholder charrette provided feedback to guide these opportunities.
Biohabitats summarized ecological opportunities and constraints and recommended areas most suitable for conservation, development, and active open space programming.
