Cannon Beach Natural Treatment System

A comprehensive ecological engineering assessment of two constructed wetland wastewater treatment cells enhances the performance of a decades-old natural system.

As part of a comprehensive assessment of the City of Cannon Beach’s wastewater treatment plant by Windsor Engineers, Biohabitats focused on reviewing the decades old natural treatment system. These two constructed wetlands receive secondary effluent and polish the wastewater discharge before entering Ecola Creek. Biohabitats’ scope included reviewing performance data, assessing on-the-ground conditions, and outlining operation changes and longer-term recommendations to improve performance.

Biohabitats’ analysis included a deep dive into recorded temperature reduction and calculating the potential given changes to system hydraulics. Biohabitats prepared a summary of observations and developed a high-level model of reduction potential for the constructed wetlands and provided insight and understanding into the current thermal challenge, expected system capacity, and potential improvements.
