September is Global Bioregion Month!

You may know that Biohabitats’ office locations are determined by “bioregions”—areas that share physical, ecological, and cultural attributes—rather than political boundaries. But did you know that Bioregionalism is a global movement?

Earlier this year, the Bioregional Coherence Circle, a collaborative network of grassroots organizations and ecological coalitions in the bioregion movement, framed September 2026 as “Global Bioregion Month,” a unifying framework to bridge and generate momentum for large-scale, place-based ecological gatherings happening globally. One such gathering, the  13th Annual r3.0 Conference: “Bioregional Regeneration as Collapse Resilience: Earth-centric Biocultural Kinship, Knowledge & Governance,” begins today and runs through September 10. Other groups and organizations participating in Global Bioregion Month include the Australian Earth Laws Alliance (AELA), the South Asia Bioregionalism Working Group, and  the Turtle Island Bioregional Congress (TIBC11).

What better time to celebrate the concept and growing global movement of bioregionalism! But what really is bioregionalism, and how might things be different if more of the world’s organizations and systems operated from a bioregional perspective? Throughout September, Biohabitats founder, Keith Bowers, will explore these questions and share his thoughts on the promise of this truly place-based way of defining the spaces in which we exist. Keep an eye out for posts from Keith this month!
