Regenerative Design
Sustainability is a noble ambition, but one we believe is shortsighted and increasingly meaningless in today’s developing world.
In order to be truly sustainable we need to live within Earth’s ecological carrying capacity. Sustainability practices generally focus on slowing down degradation, often ignoring Earth’s carrying capacity and overlooking ecological damage already incurred. Rather than relying on a toolbox of metrics or a promising technology that claims to put us on a path of sustainability, we embrace ‘regenerative design,’ a model that respects Earth’s ecological limits, heals damaged ecological processes, integrates green infrastructure, and catalyzes a mutually beneficial relationship with the land.
Regenerative design is an intentional practice that is community place-based. It is about finding and fostering the true essence of a place, exploring its possibilities and unlocking its potential to thrive. By emphasizing whole systems (discovering relationships, connections & patterns) and working within a living systems context (embracing diversity, resiliency and health), Biohabitats helps empower communities to heal ecological processes, enrich social interactions and create real wealth.
