Many people now depend on what have become degraded ecosystems. As a result, in many parts of the world, conservation of natural resources is not enough to rescue the life support systems that sustain earth’s biological diversity and natural capital. Ecological restoration can enrich biodiversity, enhance ecosystem productivity, empower local people and improve human livelihoods. Ecological restoration is taking place on multiple scales, from regional ecosystems to site specific landscapes; across the rural-urban continuum in all biomes; uniting culturally diverse peoples.
